CHLOÉ - LIVE AT ROBERT JOHNSON Vol.1

After her acclaimed debut album "The waiting room" (Kill The DJ, 2007) Electro-minimal queen Chloé will inaugurate Robert-Johnson's 2009 mix series on January 19, 2009.

The DJ/producer has been tapped by the Offenbach club to begin what will be a four DJ mix series of RJ residents. Set to produce mixes next year will be Prins Thomas, Liquid (Thomas Hammann and Gerd Janson) and Ivan Smagghe. The CDs will be able to be placed in the snazzy 12-inch-sized sleeve pictured to the right, with each mix available separately.

Chloe - The Waiting Room

French DJ/producer and Ivan Smagghe confidante Chloé is set to release 'The Waiting Room', her debut artist album.

Perhaps best known for her residency at The Pulp in Paris, and her genre-bending (or is that gender-bending?) mix CD with Smagghe, 'The Dysfunctional Family', Chloé's debut artist album looks set to cast the spotlight more brightly on her production. Her crates may be stuffed with import minimal and local electro 12”s, but the Chloé 's productions are even more diverse, encompassing electro acoustic experiments, gravelly ambient techno and drone pop.

It seems even the Kill the DJ crew is at a loss to describe Chloé's latest adventure, admitting, "We don’t really know which road she’s taking." But the Academy Music in Paris graduate is more likely to let her music do the talking for her, so you'll have to wait until October to assemble that puzzle.

Pan-Pot - Pan-O-Rama

First artist album on Mobilee comes from Berlin up and comers Pan-Pot. 'Pan-O-Rama' will be released in October.

Humbly named after a knob on a mixing desk, Pan-Pot is Berliners Tassilo Ippenberger and Thomas Benedix. The duo used to be a trio, making records with Marco Resmann/Phage from Luna City Express, which should clue you into their sound, but with the departure of Resmann, Pan-Pot are pressing ahead as a production duo. Not to mention a live act and DJ team - check RA Events for Pan-Pot dates in Europe in support of the album.

Pan-Pot have had five singles on Anja's Scheider's Mobilee label already, as well as remixes for Misc., Dapayk Solo and Damián Schwartz, all characterised by a heads down, bleepy approach to your night out. Their debut album 'Pan-O-Rama' arrives with a collab with Dessous house producer Vincenzo, as well as lead single 'Charly', which features the mysteriously named Hugh Betcha on vocals.

Statement from the man himself:

"It is all my productions and it's a form of introducing an album as a mix. Every time you do an album and then you do the next one, people start to compare how the music is different, why you did it on this label and not that label, they try to define it, "the other album was better," "there's no hit like 'Easy Lee' on it" and so forth?it's exhausting, really. So I think you always have to find a new way to introduce your music and present yourself. I chose fabric because Judy has been asking me for 3 or 4 years now, but I've been so busy. And it's really stressful to do a DJ mix. So I figured it would be much easier to do a mix with my own music, and of course fabric is the perfect label for me to do this on. The nicest thing is no one will really be talking about how it's an album, it's all moving along very naturally - no big promotion or releasing tracks for radio two months before. I really prefer for it to be treated like a normal mix CD, with no hype. Sound-wise, the mix is going to be more housey than head-y. I'm more known for head-y, trippy music, so of course it is still very trippy and monotone, in the monotone way of delivering always the same tone and doing something to your brain. But it will be more dancey and housey and summery. I always think of the dancefloor when I create music, but not a vision of the actual dancefloor - it's always a vision of what's going to happen. Of course at a club like fabric or a couple clubs in Berlin, you have this already. But many other clubs, not so much - so it's a projection, a vision. And it's not one track after another after another, it develops very subtly."

A couple of exquisite mixes for a change, these two seem quite polar at first but I think they really aren't, Justice & Efdemin.
Similarities; there baroqueness, cross-genre, and there apocalyptic feel.... these mixes make me wonder if Trentemollers EM, aswell as Sasha's Maida Vale serve as prelude to all this avant-gardness, that's easier to understand through listening than trying to put into words.... Enjoy.

Thee art duplicate above is a potrait of the Tiefschwarz brothers. Was it done at the time it seems to b, I don't know, or by who either, but the fact that they're a well rooted family in Germany, I would say it is a duplication of an original piece, commissioned "by family"(I guess) to an artist to do. I'd say some time in mid 1970's. ...The movie Big Fish just came to mind right now,...hmm let me guess why????

Okay this post is due to a very long conversation I had with the peace baby & other love delegates, about some occurrences I prefer not to disclose but altered me a great manner. One alteration that seemed to bewilder me for about a week was friend affiliations and how is it possible these can take advantage of you, by me being an utopist and a dreamer this concern affected me even more, but then again all I had to believe the previously stated was suppositions done by third persons, but still the simple thought on my mind made me weaker and seemed to suck the zest out of me. I created this term for a German interview – “inner-circle tourism.” You’re not coming as a tourist, you don’t have to grab a book and read about the nice hotels, restaurants and museums…you come and people take you inside the scene, and that’s something you never discover as a normal tourist. We have the chance to see the whole world through a different perspective. It’s kind of a social study as well, I really love travelling so for me it’s double the pleasure...
...In the beginning we didn’t even mix; we just learned it by doing. The people were so open-minded, they just came to have a good time. It was all very art-related and conceptual. It was a crazy time. It was not only about dancing, it was also celebrating and partying with weird mottos. For instance, when the wall came down between east and west Germany, we had an “East Germany” party - we were building a wall all around the club and had weird furniture and decorations from East Germany. We had funny table tennis parties with a fog machine and a strobe light and we’d lock the door – people were running around the table tennis for hours and hours. The fog machine was so strong you couldn’t see anything and the strobe light exploded because it was on for hours. It was just ridiculous, performance parties. People would grab all the toilet paper and wrap everybody in the club with toilet paper… We once had a heaven and hell party with two levels, upstairs was the bar lounge and downstairs was the club and my father was on the door deciding who would go to heaven and who would go to hell...

And that's a heartwarming tale you can only get in the techno world.

RUOK? RUOK? Everyone’s been there at one time or another but no one’s documented it quite so explicitly as Ambivalent (aka Kevin McHugh) on his first release for Minus. Set against a stripped down groove, you can almost feel the back of your eyeballs start to sweat, as the pitched down vocals of the title track narrate an all too familiar tale of late night over-indulgence (also included in acappella form). The whip-crack snare struggles to contain a sliding, elastic bassline and a fuzzy synth line infiltrates the proceedings like a wasp that’s somehow got trapped inside your head. The vocals grow increasingly demented in the breakdown before the subsequent return really cranks it up a notch. The hi hats double up and the subsonic toms pound the life out of the soundsystem right through to the end of the track. Just remember kids, don’t accept sweets from strangers... The B side kicks of with Indecision. Actually there’s nothing indecisive about this track as we get straight to the point once again with a silky smooth bass riff, some cool rhythmic interplay and a sultry hookline that’s guaranteed to get those hips gyrating. As the track starts peaking, a hypnotic drone emerges from the inky blackness like a red-hot neon beacon. It’s all the track needs to start spinning out, as Ambivalent skillfully punctuates the groove with subtle flips, reverses and breaks. What’s more, to close out the vinyl selection Nugget comes complete with an acid tinged, modulating hook line that will twist and seduce hungry minds in equal measures. As with all Minus EPs there’s a cold logic running through this body of work that may not be immediately apparent by just dropping the needle casually on each track. Hello...ok Saturdays affairs left me a bit nourished. Not only did we have a "perfect" setting; a camping tent equipped with a basic setup; mixer, vps, cdjs, and laptops hooked to a blasting output, located in an outdoor recreation area, hooked with multiple bbq grills, benches that were used as media areas and dinning tables, next to a fairly wide waterway that was trafficked through all day. Also about 100ft east was the ocean, and yes the music was clear enough there too. I was extremely intrigued by the authorities, which never came by and disturbed the peac:e till precisely the right moment, ten to eleven pm the time that party was meant to conclude, since it had started at noon and most of us had plans for later that evening. Highlights of the day, music-wise, besides myself were this kid Michael Louis who played mnml with a techy edge at a relatively slow bpm in comparison to what I call the anti-van, all on vinyl, I liked! Dj Nova had an excellent selection of tunes individually but missed out on his set's composition, ass seen through my shoes, The End Has Begun Mathew Johnson Tiger mix was his highlight, and then Martin EZ to close the evening with an exhibition of Berlin record shop products, set included Bodzin, it was f@^%!) Amazing!!..when u dance like like nobodies watching eventhough ur tired and sober, well not that sober, thats when u know its GOO:D And as if the acoustic stimuli wasn't enough, which it never really is, there was this dude that got setup at about Sundown right after his Saturdays feast, with three DVD players and an analog video mixer, doing visuals utilizing his own footage and edits. Utopist it may seem, utopic it felt, and utopic it was. And as I said, I left that place with a broader perspective, one that for a specific matter in concern makes me want to mash digital functionality with Phonographic.

One of my best experiences this conference, what a shame that the mix is missing about 1hr50 minutes. They were scheduled to close the sunset session after Hawtin, from 7-9pm, they concluded some time around 9:40. There were some technical dificulties at the begining but they managed to get around and fix it. What can be better than two brothers with superb musical taste in control of thee Party.

The house is built on a sloping site, and in order to minimize the excavation work the rear half of the house is dug into the ground, the excavated earth being used as fill for the front half, creating a level floor. The floor surface at the embedded rear part of the house curls up to meet the roof, naturally absorbing the imposed load of the earth. The roof is flat and is fixed rigidly to the upturned slab freeing the 3 columns at the front from any horizontal loads. As a result of bearing only vertical loads these columns could be reduced to a minimum 55 mm in diameter. In order to express the structural concept as purely as possible all the walls and mullions have been purged leaving only sliding panels. Spatially, the house consists of a ‘universal floor’ on which the kitchen, bathroom and toilet are all placed without enclosure, but which can be flexibly partitioned by the sliding doors.
